Sacramento, California
For our 4th annual A Toast to Clearing the Air, we invited some of our most important and hard-working air quality heroes—Sacramento’s foremost regulators and legislators—to share their hidden talents and belt out a few songs in the name of clean air. Borrowing some popular tunes from years past, we reworked the lyrics and chronicled in song our collective efforts to clear the air.
David Meisel with Pacific Gas and Electric Co, the evening’s Presenting Sponsor, opened the evening with a rousing toast to “the progress we’ve made and the challenges ahead.”
Assemblymember Ben Hueso started the evening with his own clever rendition of Jordin Sparks’ song “No Air,” accompanying himself on keyboard. The song’s repeating line “Tell me how I’m supposed to breathe with no air?” lent itself well to the theme of the evening.
We fired up the karaoke machine for Bonnie Raitt’s “Something to Talk About,” in which State Water Resources Control Board Member Felicia Marcus and Gold Medal sponsor Jamie Knapp of J Knapp Communications pleaded, “What about air, air, air?”
The tempo picked up with Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing”—performed by Assemblymembers Bonnie Lowenthal and Betsy Butler, along with California Air Resources Board (ARB) Member Hector De La Torre and CCA Vice Chair Todd Campbell—which turned into an anthem for air-friendly transit, complete with a giant dancing Clean Air Bus.
ARB Chairman Mary Nichols and ARB Board Members Sandra Berg and DeeDee D'Amo sang an ode to the hard-working staff at the ARB with Johnny Nash’s “I Can See Clearly Now,” wishing for all the “bad lawsuits to disappear.” For the grand finale, CCA staff spoofed Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody,” featuring a factory-owning villain and a band of advocates shouting, “Polluter, no! We will not let you go!”
CCA has been around even longer than any of these songs, and many who joined us on this lively evening have been instrumental in our multi-platinum history of success. We are grateful for the support of all who helped make this event possible. This year’s Toast raised funds to support our crucial work and a continued future of reducing air pollution in California.
We look forward to seeing you at next year’s event, when we all raise our voices in song and our glasses in toast to clearing the air!

California Air Quality Awards
June 21, 2012
Comedy legend Jay Leno and Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa were among the celebrities, government officials and business people honored at the 2012 California Air Quality Awards for their efforts to keep California’s air clean. CCA presented the awards in a ceremony at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles. The event featured a swanky cocktail reception; a casual meal of Johnny Rockets burgers, fries and milkshakes, plus plenty of beer donated by Eel River Brewery; and a special performance by folk-rock band The Borrowers Debt.
After the honors were bestowed, Bob Lutz—former vice chairman of GM and the father of the Chevy Volt—made a surprise announcement on behalf of VIA Motors, co-presenting sponsor of the evening along with PG&E. VIA Motors pledged to donate the first consumer-built Vtrux—serial number #00001—to CCA, and they asked Jay Leno to sign the hood to commemorate the occasion. Mr. Lutz christened the truck “The Lenutz.” CCA plans to auction this piece of automotive history—the world’s first extended-range electric pick-up truck—in 2013.
“I may have over 100 cars, but I never drive more than one at a time,” said Leno playfully. “In recent years, I’ve made it my goal to speak out and make people aware of ways that we can best help clean up our air and make it safer for the next generation. It really is about taking personal responsibility and making sure that everyone does their part.”
“It’s very important that we start taking the steps today to ensure that tomorrow’s environment is good for our future generations,” added Villaraigosa. “By focusing on car and truck emissions as a part of our contributions to the atmosphere, we are moving closer to not only maintaining our current climate, but also continuing to reduce the effects that have already been put into motion.”
Each recipient is being honored for their unique contribution to air quality in California:

For our third annual A Toast to Clearing the Air, we added a twist to this year’s reception in celebration of CCA’s 40th anniversary: We invited some of our most important and hard-working air quality heroes—
Assemblymember Ben Hueso started the evening with a jaw-dropping solo performance on piano, with his own version of The Police’s “Every Breath You Take.” The entire audience joined in, voicing the need for “watchful eyes” on the air our children breathe. As our house band kicked it up, Assemblymembers Fiona Ma and Betsy Butler, donning feather boas and “Supreme” attitudes, pleaded for
CCA’s tribute band, The Inhalers, gave their most hilarious Who impressions when calling for renewable energy on “Clean Generation”; in true rock star fashion, CCA Campaign Director Martin Schlageter ended by smashing his inflatable guitar on stage. And for the grand finale, the Mother Superior of California air quality—California Air Resources Board Chairman Mary Nichols—crooned “Climb Every Staircase,” declaring that the hills are alive with the promise of clean air!
Like the classic tunes we parodied, CCA’s history dates back several decades, and many who joined us on this lively evening have been instrumental in our multi-platinum history of success. We are grateful for the support of all who helped make possible this event—and our 40 years of clean air progress. More than 300 people attended the 2009 California Air Quality Awards luncheon as the Coalition for Clean Air honored California’s leading women working to improve air quality.
Honors were given to women who have contributed to the scientific consensus on atmospheric chemistry, shown that corporate America can lead by example, spearheaded environmental justice initiatives and enacted landmark California regulations that serve as a precedent for the nation. Awards were presented by top female officials who have demonstrated a strong commitment toward California’s environmental protection.
“The Coalition for Clean Air (CCA) provides a consistent, strong voice for the public whenever issues impacting air pollution are on the agenda in Sacramento. Time and again they have helped to prevent backsliding and promote effective regulations when special interests were lined up to take advantage of the political process. CCA is one of the main reasons why California consistently leads the nation in promoting innovative technologies to improve air quality,” said honoree California Air Resources Board chairwoman, Mary Nichols.
The luncheon commenced with an eco-silent auction, featuring more than 45 earth-friendly products, which helped raise valuable funds for CCA.
