The Honda Civic Natural Gas Sedan (formerly known as the Civic GX) has been crowned “America’s Greenest Vehicle” by the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy eight times. Energy and automotive manufacturer and parts companies are investing to develop next-generation natural gas vehicles that are cleaner, more efficient and have near-zero emissions. The widespread deployment of these next-generation natural gas cars and trucks can play a key role as an affordable transportation solution that helps reduce emissions to improve Southern California’s air quality.
This free event, held at The Center at Cathedral Plaza in downtown Los Angeles, hosted a keynote speaker, panel discussion, speaker presentations and networking with industry innovators to learn how the next generation of natural gas vehicles will be part of the long-term solution to clean the air in Southern California. For our third annual A Toast to Clearing the Air, we added a twist to this year’s reception in celebration of CCA’s 40th anniversary: We invited some of our most important and hard-working air quality heroes—
Assemblymember Ben Hueso started the evening with a jaw-dropping solo performance on piano, with his own version of The Police’s “Every Breath You Take.” The entire audience joined in, voicing the need for “watchful eyes” on the air our children
breathe. As our house band kicked it up, Assemblymembers Fiona Ma and Betsy Butler, donning feather boas and “Supreme” attitudes, pleaded for
CCA’s tribute band, The Inhalers, gave their most hilarious Who impressions when calling for renewable energy on “Clean Generation”; in true rock star fashion, CCA Campaign Director Martin Schlageter ended by smashing his inflatable guitar on stage. And for the grand finale, the Mother Superior of California air quality—California Air Resources Board Chairman Mary Nichols—crooned “Climb Every Staircase,” declaring that the hills are alive with the promise of clean air!
Like the classic tunes we parodied, CCA’s history dates back several decades, and many who joined us on this lively evening have been instrumental in our multi-platinum history of success. More than 350 of the brightest air quality luminaries joined us to celebrate CCA’s big 4-0 in Los Angeles on July 15.
The festivities began with a star-studded VIP reception. Pedro Pizarro, President of Edison Mission Energy—a competitive power generation subsidiary of our presenting sponsor, Edison International—welcomed more than 100 community members, business leaders and dignitaries. Ed Begley Jr. then led a panel discussion with fellow honorees Senator Kevin De León and Metro Board Member Richard Katz, along with California Air Resources Board Chairman Mary Nichols and Southern California Edison’s Director of Electric Transportation, Ed Kjaer. Topics ranged from California’s climate crisis to the future of alternative fuels. The impressive crowd and lively ambiance served as a clear sign that we are not alone on the road to clean air.
As the 2011 edition of the California Air Quality Awards ceremony commenced, founding CCA board members Ralph Perry and Sabrina Schiller led a rousing champagne toast, paying recognition to the “Smog Fighters” who have made our work possible for the last four decades. Then, Board Chair Erik Neandross and President/CEO Joe Lyou entertained the audience with a witty and nostalgic rundown of some of CCA’s biggest recent accomplishments.
The luncheon was punctuated with inspiring words by honorees Ed Begley Jr. and Senator Kevin De León, who recounted favorite memories of working with CCA and envisioned a future of even more victories and cleaner air. Following the ceremony, attendees eagerly convened around our gourmet ice cream sundae bar—truly a sweet ending to this memorable event.

Spirits were high as nearly 350 guests from across the continent came to celebrate innovation in clean transportation at the 2010 California Air Quality Awards in Los Angeles. On September 2 at the CSU Fresno Business Auditorium, more than 80 individuals attended the Industrial and Agricultural Energy Forum. This free event was organized by the Coalition for Clean Air and co-sponsored by the Economic Development Corporation serving Fresno County and the San Joaquin Valley Clean Energy Organization. A complimentary continental breakfast was provided by A-C Electric Company.
The two-hour forum consisted of a panel of seven speakers who presented on energy saving solutions, renewable energy, business grants, rebates and tax incentives. Also demonstrated were two business case studies on energy efficiency for large-scale industries and solar energy for farms. Forum participants were able to interact with the diverse speaker panel and receive valuable cost-saving information.
In addition, vendors in the areas of energy efficiency, solar technology and clean air were featured at the Energy Forum and were available for questions.

More than 300 people attended the 2009 California Air Quality Awards luncheon as the Coalition for Clean Air honored California’s leading women working to improve air quality.
Honors were given to women who have contributed to the scientific consensus on atmospheric chemistry, shown that corporate America can lead by example, spearheaded environmental justice initiatives and enacted landmark California regulations that serve as a precedent for the nation. Awards were presented by top female officials who have demonstrated a strong commitment toward California’s environmental protection.
“The Coalition for Clean Air (CCA) provides a consistent, strong voice for the public whenever issues impacting air pollution are on the agenda in Sacramento. Time and again they have helped to prevent backsliding and promote effective regulations when special interests were lined up to take advantage of the political process. CCA is one of the main reasons why California consistently leads the nation in promoting innovative technologies to improve air quality,” said honoree California Air Resources Board chairwoman, Mary Nichols.

The 2008 California Air Quality Awards luncheon was a record-breaking success! The Coalition for Clean Air raised more than $215,000 and hosted more than 350 attendees who gathered to applaud five honorees for their leadership in improving California's air quality.
Held in Los Angeles, California, the festivities began with a roundtable discussion between prominent CCA sponsors and California's regulatory air agency leadership, including Air Resources Board Chair Mary Nichols, Barry Wallerstein, executive director of the South Coast Air Quality Management District, and Wayne Nastri, Region 9 Administrator, California EPA. At the following VIP reception, platinum title sponsors Clean Energy and Southern California Edison welcomed a convivial crowd of clean air supporters.
As the highlight of the luncheon, awards were presented to five honorees for their significant contributions to reducing global warming. Honorees included Google, comedian Harry Shearer and California State Attorney General Edmund Brown Jr. The Honorable "Jerry" Brown was presented the Leadership in Government Award by CCA board member Peter Weiner. Said Weiner of Brown, he "has propelled California as an innovator of public policy solutions to global warming by bringing landmark lawsuits and being a passionate advocate for more action."
Anne Shen Smith, 13-year CCA board member, presented Ralph Perry with the first ever Ralph B. Perry III Lifetime Achievement Award by saying that "as a founding member of the Coalition for Clean Air, Ralph Perry is the longest serving board member in the 37-year history of the organization. If the Coalition for Clean Air had a father, it would be Ralph Perry." The award is accompanied by the initiation of CCA's first ever endowment fund, the Ralph B. Perry III Endowment Fund to Benefit CCA for Internship Use.
The luncheon commenced with an eco-silent auction, featuring more than 45 earth-friendly products, which helped raise valuable funds for CCA. After the luncheon, attendees enjoyed a delectable dessert bar, complete with a chocolate fountain.
