Message from the President and CEO
If you live in California, air pollution touches your life—from high asthma rates, to alarming numbers of premature deaths, to the $28 billion price tag we pay each year. California is home to seven of the country’s 10 most air-polluted cities, with 90% of our population breathing air that violates federal health standards. And with our heavy contribution to climate change, California’s air pollution impacts those far beyond our own borders.
The Coalition for Clean Air (CCA) is uniquely qualified to combat these statistics. We target the state’s most damaging pollution sources by working with legislators and regulators—from local agencies to the White House—and collaborating with businesses, community groups and fellow advocates to provide innovative solutions that withstand political backlash. Our exclusive focus on California enables us to effectively address its acute air quality problem, as well as to use the state’s distinctive position as a testing ground for the nation’s environmental standards. And our statewide network adds a strategic edge to local air issues by bridging community efforts to opportunities that improve air quality across California.

CCA organizes regional training events throughout the year to provide new air advocates with necessary skills, resources and opportunities to strengthen our collective efforts.
The Coalition for Clean Air is California’s only statewide organization exclusively advocating for clean air.

Strategic presence
- Three offices across the state: Sacramento, Fresno and Los Angeles
- The only air advocacy organization with a staffed office in the San Joaquin Valley
Expert and respected staff
- Twelve staff members with more than 130 combined years of air quality and environmental policy, community organizing and government affairs experience
- Includes a former EPA deputy secretary and a current South Coast Air Quality Management District governing board member
- In 2010, our advocates:
- presented at more than 50 air quality conferences around the world
- collaborated with more than 75 community groups and 15 environmental coalitions
Credibility
- Advocated for more than 15 nationally groundbreaking laws and policies, including global warming laws, fuel standards, and the nation’s first ban on smog-forming dry-cleaning agents
- Persuaded more than 50 companies/organizations to adopt clean air practices, including energy efficiency efforts with community colleges, utilities and cargo vessels
- Party to seven successful lawsuits to hold the government and industry accountable for clean air policies and practices, including amendments to the Clean Air Act and settlements for mitigation efforts from grocery chains, shipping terminals and utilities
- Secured more than $2 billion in funding for air quality improvements, such as cleaner school buses and trucks
- Published more than 20 reports or policy white papers exposing major air pollution problems and outlining effective solutions, including clean air commuting practices, freight industry reforms and global warming mitigation efforts
- Received more than 30 awards or recognition for service from such notable organizations as the EPA, City of Los Angeles and Environment Now

The Coalition for Clean Air earns top ratings by Charity Navigator and the Better Business Bureau because more than 83% of every dollar you contribute goes directly to funding our work to protect the air you breathe.
