“My name is and I’m a constituent and I’m calling to urge you to support SB 342. The bill would help protect communities who are disproportionately impacted by the toxic pollution in the South Coast Air Basin by giving environmental justice representatives voting power at the South Coast Air Quality Management District. This will help reform the agency and protect vulnerable communities within its jurisdiction. Thank you!”
Sources of toxic air pollution are typically situated in and around low-income communities and communities of color, where residents, especially vulnerable groups such as children, elderly, and pregnant women, are at a much higher risk for the adverse health impacts resulting from the poor air quality.
The South Coast Air Basin is home to nearly half of the state’s population and has some of the worst air quality in the nation. Nearly 2/3rds of all disadvantaged communities, including some of the state’s most pollution-burdened communities, are under SCAQMD.
SB 342 is critical to ensuring environmental justice representatives have voting power on the SCAQMD board so that real actions can be taken to address sources of toxic pollution.
The bill will be voted on within the next week. Call your Senator now and/or add your name to the list of supporters urging them to vote yes on SB 342.
