The powers that be

Almost a quarter of California's greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions come from the production of electricity. Two of the most polluting energy sources—coal and natural gas—comprise 66% our energy production. Coal in particular emits high amounts of GHGs and toxic air pollution that causes smog, acid rain, global warming and a host of health problems.

The case against coal

In an average year, a typical coal plant generates:

• 3.7 million tons of CO₂—equivalent to cutting down 161 million trees
• 10,000 tons of SO₂, which causes acid rain
• 500 tons of small airborne particles, which can cause chronic bronchitis, aggravated asthma and premature death
• 10,200 tons of NO_x—equivalent to half a million late-model cars
• 220 tons of smog-forming hydrocarbons
• Hundreds of pounds of other hazardous chemicals, such as mercury, arsenic and lead
